Grassland fallows as key for successful insect conservation

چکیده

There is widescale evidence for declines in insect biodiversity at a global scale. Agricultural intensification considered to be one of the major causes these declines. Traditionally managed habitat types, such as hay meadows, harbour rich diversity plants and animals but have been often transformed into crop fields or silage grassland. To evaluate role (i) agricultural (ii) traditionally meadows fallows conservation, we here compare bee, hoverfly, leafhopper assemblages on 45 sites along gradient land use intensity western Germany. We included moist long-term grassland fallows, three types grasslands, each represented by nine replicates. Species numbers bees leafhoppers were significantly higher than other management types. Grassland also harboured most distinct assemblages, while those very similar largely overlapping. The surprising similarity meadow may due investigating highly mobile taxa within landscape composed fine-scale mosaic intensified Our results demonstrate high importance unmanaged areas, even when overall still comparatively low. suggest that temporal (unmanaged 3–5 years) should subsidised agri-environmental schemes increase heterogeneity preserve diversity.

Grassland Establishment for Wildlife Conservation

Establishing grasslands has important implications for wildlife, especially in areas historically rich in grasslands that have since been converted to row crop agriculture. Most grasslands established under farm conservation programs have replaced annual crops with perennial cover that provides year-round resources for wildlife. This change in land use has had a huge influence on grassland bird...

Insect Conservation and Diversity Insect conservation - finding the way forward

Relatively speaking, the conservation of mammals, birds and other large terrestrial vertebrates is a simple task. The bulk of species are described, their ecologies are reasonably well known, the threats to their habitat or breeding systems are often documented, and the funding to implement recovery programmes readily available; e.g. mammals and birds are charismatic and the general public are ...

Tagging as a Key to Successful Mt

This paper describes the key role of a stochastic morphological tagger in an MT system between very closely related languages. The MT system Česílko exploits the close relatedness of both natural languages in question (Czech and Slovak), which allows substantial simplification of the translation method used. It also uses to a great advantage the possibilities of combination of a human translati...

On Grassland Bird Conservation in the Northeast

Populations of many grassland birds in North America have declined significantly during the last 30 years (Knopf 1994, Peterjohn and Sauer 1999). Although population trends of many groups of breeding birds vary across geographic regions (James et al. 1992, Herkert 1995, Sauer et al. 1997), the declining trend for grassland birds is consistent across much of North America, including the Northeas...
